Never stop or change TB medicines on your own
Do not stop, skip or change your TB medicines without talking to your doctor or DOTS provider, even if you feel better. Stopping early can bring TB back and can make it drug-resistant.
Contact your health facility at once if you have:
- yellow eyes or yellow skin, or dark urine with pale stools
- any change in your eyesight, such as blurring or trouble seeing colours
- severe or repeated vomiting, or you cannot keep food down
- a skin rash, itching with swelling, or blisters
The treatment journey for drug-sensitive TB
India uses a daily regimen for drug-sensitive TB. The ICMR workflow describes it as 2 months of four medicines (isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide and ethambutol) in the intensive phase, followed by 4 months of three medicines (pyrazinamide is stopped) in the continuation phase. Your doctor decides the medicines and doses; this guide never gives doses.

| Phase | About how long | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Intensive phase | 2 months (8 weeks) | Four medicines daily. A sputum test at the end checks progress. |
| Continuation phase | 4 months (16 weeks) | Three medicines daily. A test at the end, and the outcome is recorded. |
| After treatment | Check-ups at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months | To catch any return of TB early. |
Some kinds of TB need longer treatment, for example TB of the brain or spine. Drug-resistant TB uses different medicines. See TB outside the lungs and MDR-TB treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Is TB treatment free in India?
Yes. TB treatment is free at government health facilities, and notified patients of private doctors can get free TB medicines through the programme.
How long is TB treatment?
Usually about 6 months for drug-sensitive TB. The Central TB Division says drug-sensitive TB treatment generally takes 6 to 9 months. Some forms and drug-resistant TB take longer.
Can I stop when I feel better?
No. Feeling better is a good sign, but the TB bacteria are not gone yet. Stopping early can bring TB back and cause drug resistance. Only your doctor can end treatment.
Are there new TB treatment guidelines?
Guidelines are updated from time to time. For example, a 6-month BPaLM regimen for drug-resistant TB was approved in September 2024, and TB preventive treatment was expanded in August 2025. Your health facility follows the current guidelines. See MDR-TB.
Can Ayurvedic or home remedies treat TB?
The national programme treats TB with the medicines described here. Do not replace them with other remedies, and talk to your doctor before taking anything else alongside them.
