Never stop or change TB medicines on your own

Do not stop, skip or change your TB medicines without talking to your doctor or DOTS provider, even if you feel better. Stopping early can bring TB back and can make it drug-resistant.

Contact your health facility at once if you have:

  • yellow eyes or yellow skin, or dark urine with pale stools
  • any change in your eyesight, such as blurring or trouble seeing colours
  • severe or repeated vomiting, or you cannot keep food down
  • a skin rash, itching with swelling, or blisters

What makes a cure more likely

Can TB come back?

TB can return, especially if treatment was incomplete. That is why the programme follows people up at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months after treatment. If cough, fever or weight loss return, get tested promptly. Stopping early can also make TB drug-resistant.

How long can a person live after TB treatment?

People who complete treatment and are cured can go on to live full lives. Some people have lasting lung damage, so tell your doctor about any ongoing breathlessness.

Frequently asked questions

Can TB be cured without treatment?

Do not rely on that. TB needs proper treatment, which is free at government health facilities.

Is TB curable in the last stage?

Even advanced TB is treated, but it is more dangerous and recovery is harder. That is why early testing matters.

Can I marry or have children after TB?

Yes. Once treated, TB does not stop you from marrying or having children. See life after TB.
