Missing a dose happens. What matters is what you do next: contact your DOTS provider or doctor and follow their advice. Do not try to fix it on your own.
Never stop or change TB medicines on your own
Do not stop, skip or change your TB medicines without talking to your doctor or DOTS provider, even if you feel better. Stopping early can bring TB back and can make it drug-resistant.
Contact your health facility at once if you have:
- yellow eyes or yellow skin, or dark urine with pale stools
- any change in your eyesight, such as blurring or trouble seeing colours
- severe or repeated vomiting, or you cannot keep food down
- a skin rash, itching with swelling, or blisters
If you missed a dose
Tell your provider today
Call or visit your treatment supporter, DOTS provider or health facility.
Do not double up on your own
Do not take extra medicine to make up unless your doctor tells you to.
Restart as advised
Follow exactly what your provider tells you.
Fix the reason
Side effects, travel, work or running out of medicines can all be solved with your provider.
Why every dose matters
The Central TB Division warns that incomplete treatment can lead to drug resistance. Drug-resistant TB needs longer, harder treatment. Regular daily doses give the best chance of a cure.
Ways to remember
- Take medicines at the same time every day, linked to a habit such as breakfast.
- Tick each day in a dose diary. Our treatment journey tracker has a printable one.
- Keep a few days of medicines with you when travelling, as your provider advises.
- Ask your health facility about adherence tools such as 99DOTS or a MERM box.
Tell your health facility before you move. Your Ni-kshay record can be transferred so you continue treatment without a break.
