Ni-kshay is not an abbreviation. The name joins two Hindi words: नि from निवारण (removal, prevention) and क्षय (the Hindi word for TB). Together they mean “ending TB”.

A short history
2012: Ni-kshay launched
A National Informatics Centre article records that NIKSHAY was launched on 4 June 2012 as a web-based, case-based system to monitor patients of the then Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP). It recorded tests, treatment, HIV status and contact tracing, and sent SMS messages to patients.
May 2012: notification required
TB notification by all providers became mandatory, making Ni-kshay the national register of TB patients.
2018 onwards: support payments
Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana began paying nutrition support to all notified TB patients from 1 April 2018, through Ni-kshay.
2020: NTEP
RNTCP was renamed the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP).
2022: Ni-kshay 2.0 and Ni-kshay Mitra
The community support portal was launched with the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan on 9 September 2022.
