Written from official TB programme sources Updated 16 Oct 2026 3 min read

A Ni-kshay Mitra is a person or organisation that supports people with TB, usually with monthly food, for at least six months. It is part of the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, launched on 9 September 2022.

Who can become a Ni-kshay Mitra

The official guidance booklet lists co-operative societies, corporates, elected representatives, individuals, institutions, NGOs, political parties and partners. Individuals can choose a single health facility. Other Mitras choose a whole block, urban ward, district or state.

Kinds of support

How to register

  1. Go to the community support portal

The guidance booklet gives the self-registration address as communitysupport.nikshay.in (the Ni-kshay 2.0 portal). Type it yourself.

  2. Choose the area

A health facility for individuals, or a block, ward, district or state for organisations.

  3. Choose support type and duration

Six months, one year, two years or three years.

  4. Receive the list of consenting patients

The booklet says the list of consenting patients is shared with Mitras on the 23rd of every month.

  5. Deliver support regularly

Work with the TB Unit to deliver food baskets or other help on time each month.

Consent and privacy

Health staff explain the support to each patient in person. Patients are free to enrol or not, and saying no does not affect their treatment. Consent is given by signature, thumb impression or an OTP to the registered mobile, and is recorded on Ni-kshay. Mitras must not use beneficiary data for any other purpose or share it with anyone.

Do

  • Deliver on time every month; patients plan around it.
  • Respect privacy: no photos or social media posts that identify patients without clear consent.
  • Ask the TB Unit for the recommended food basket for your region.

Do not

  • Do not visit patients in ways that reveal their TB status to neighbours.
  • Do not use patient lists for marketing, politics or anything else.
  • Do not stop support suddenly; tell the TB Unit in advance.

What changed in 2024

On 7 October 2024 the Health Ministry announced that the Ni-kshay Mitra initiative would be extended to household contacts of TB patients, who will also receive food baskets to improve their nutrition. Read more on TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
