Most people finish TB treatment without serious problems. Some side effects are harmless, some can be managed with your provider’s help, and a few need a doctor at once.

Never stop or change TB medicines on your own
Do not stop, skip or change your TB medicines without talking to your doctor or DOTS provider, even if you feel better. Stopping early can bring TB back and can make it drug-resistant.
Contact your health facility at once if you have:
- yellow eyes or yellow skin, or dark urine with pale stools
- any change in your eyesight, such as blurring or trouble seeing colours
- severe or repeated vomiting, or you cannot keep food down
- a skin rash, itching with swelling, or blisters

How long do side effects last?
It depends on the side effect. Orange urine lasts while you take rifampicin. In the continuation phase pyrazinamide is stopped, so problems linked to it, such as joint pain, may ease then, but tell your provider rather than waiting. Tingling, vision changes and jaundice must be checked by a doctor straight away. Never stop or skip medicines to see if a side effect goes away.
Side effects of TB treatment for lymph node, bone or brain TB
The medicines are the same family, so the same side effects apply. Treatment may be longer, so keep reporting any problem at every visit.
