TB is an infection, not a curse or a sign of bad character. Fear of stigma stops many people from getting tested or finishing treatment. Here is how to protect your privacy, keep your work and family life, and look forward after TB.
Your privacy
- Notification on Ni-kshay is for your care and support, not for public view.
- Ni-kshay Mitras support only patients who consent, and must not use or share patient data for any other purpose.
- You decide who you tell about your TB. A doctor’s note can explain absence from work without details.
Work and income
Most people can return to work once their doctor says they are no longer infectious and they feel well enough. Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana pays Rs 1,000 per month of treatment as of October 2026, and Ni-kshay Mitras can offer vocational support. See all support for TB patients.
Marriage and family
After successful treatment, TB does not stop anyone from marrying or having children. During treatment, simple home precautions protect the family. See is TB contagious.
Words that help
Do
- Say “a person with TB”, not “a TB patient” as an identity.
- Offer practical help: a ride to the clinic, a cooked meal.
- Remind them TB is curable and treatment is free.
Do not
- Do not use separate plates or isolate them; TB does not spread through food or touch.
- Do not share their diagnosis without permission.
- Do not blame them; anyone can get TB.
Life after TB
- Keep follow-up visits at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months after treatment.
- Eat well, stay active and avoid smoking and alcohol.
- Report any lasting cough or breathlessness to your doctor.

Track my treatmentFrequently asked questions
Can I marry after TB treatment?
Yes. Once treated, TB is not a reason not to marry.
Can my employer find out I have TB from Ni-kshay?
Ni-kshay records are for the health system, not for employers. You choose what to share.
Can a TB patient smoke after treatment?
Smoking harms the lungs, which may already be healing. Quitting is strongly advised.
